More than the Bauhaus: Modernist Architecture in Saxony-Anhalt
100 years of Bauhaus! On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919, the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology in Saxony-Anhalt raised the question: How can it contribute to this special anniversary? Our country has an unimagined abundance of cultural goods of this era. In addition to those in Dessau, where the Bauhaus resided in the years 1925-32, the Zeitgeist and the modernist will to reform are reflected in many facets in architectural monuments of Saxony-Anhalt. This catalog-based publication aims to present the diversity of this architectural heritage in a concise form. The monument conservators see themselves as curators of a "permanent exhibition" of architecture existing in the state, which only represents a small part of this rich treasure. It consciously focuses not only on the conurbations of the Bauhaus and modernity in Magdeburg, Halle (Saale) and Dessau, but also sheds light on the manifold varieties of Modernism in the »Province«.
The individual buildings are presented in short texts. All of their authors are proven experts: employees of the State Office for Heritage Management and Archeology (LDA) and the Monument Protection Authority in Halle (Saale) as well as Sabine Ullrich from Magdeburg.
In addition, the catalog is particularly characterized by the illustrations. These are to a large extent the work of the photographer in the LDA, Gunar Preuß, who, with his unrestricted commitment to this project, spent months in the country following in the footsteps of modernity.
