A very personal approach
[Translate to English:] headline
The symposium will be dealing with the New Objectivity (New Building) and design in the Rhineland and in Westphalia as well as with the roots, expectations and aspirirations of a new democratic constitution. Wit this agenda it hopes to include the ideas of Bauhaus as well as its utopian programs of the new man, new city and new world in that particular time context that Bauhaus wanted to form anew. At the same time it wants to direct our attention to the aftermath as well as the current timeliness of developments that happened at that time. With this programme North Rhine Westphalia has positioned itself in a unique way and found a new core theme within the Bauhaus anniversary events. Under the patronage of Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, the Minister of Culture and Science in the State of North Rhine Westphalia, it hopes to link 100 years bauhaus with the 100 years anniversary of the Weimar Republic.
The programme is accordinngly varied and diverse. Two days will be devoted to the headings and captions: Something New Has Happened in the West and Contects and Consequences. Certain topics such as Democracy and Architecture, Society and Design, will be handled in different sections of the symposium. There will also be reports by well-known scientists such as New Objectivity (New Building) given by Prof. Werner Durth (Technical University of Darmstadt) or Max Burchartz, Bauhaus Influences in the Ruhr Area, Prof. Gerda Breuer (em. Professor for the History of Design). Equally eye-opening will be contributions that wil be able to show Bauhaus from different perspectives other than the historical and architectural ones that are commonly accepted. For example, Sabine Graf‘s relection – Good Work – and – Gender Justice – or her contribution – Bauhaus and the Silk Industry. There will also be a report by Christiane Lange, Design as a Strategy for Innovation. There will also be a special added attraction that is completely in line with the intercultural and interdisciplinary approach taken by Bauhaus: Participation in the symposium will be counted towards any adult or further educational programs for teachers and architects.
The symposium will be hosted by the Ministry for Culture and Science in North Rhine Westphalia, the Regional Councils of Rhineland and Westphalia-Lippe as well as by the Chambre of Architecture in North Rhine Westphalia and the Institute of Modernism in Rhineland at the Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf.
