[Translate to English:] „Mies in the West” 2019

One of Mies van der Rohe’s later students once described him as “a Rhinelander”. Although the German-American architect worked internationally and thought globally, the Rhineland always remained his home. Until the very end, he kept in touch with a network of family, friends and professional contacts there. The two Krefeld villas “Lange” and “Esters” are among his most famous works – but what about the rest? There’s plenty more to see in Aachen, Essen, Krefeld and their surroundings, not only in the form of architecture by Mies van der Rohe himself, but also houses and buildings by people who were inspired by his style and approach. Until June 30, 2019, all these aspects are presented together in the Krefeld HE-Building, which he also designed: the exhibition “Mies in the West” provides an ideal overview before setting out to trace the architect’s footsteps in the Rhineland.

The Feiningers

Around 319 kilometres away in Quedlinburg, the focus lies less on the work and more on the clan of one of the great Bauhaus artists: “The Feiningers – a Bauhaus Family” dives deep into the social, emotional and private environment of a creative dynasty. After all, there were not only Lyonel, the original Bauhaus master, and Andreas, the inspired photographer, but also Julia, T. Lux, Laurence, Wysse and Eleonore. Never heard of them? All you need to do is visit the Lyonel Feininger Gallery by September 2, 2019. If you bring your own family with you, children will enjoy the parallel exhibition “red. yellow. blue. Bauhaus for Children”.

WERKstatt Schlemmer

If you plan well, you can move on from the Feiningers to Gotha and visit Oskar Schlemmer. The Herzogliche Museum is presenting an exhibition on him until July 28, 2019. The “Glass Workshop” in the basement is also exciting: “WERKstatt Schlemmer” invites you to try things out for yourself. In cooperation with the Weimarer Mal- und Zeichenschule e.V., school groups, families and individual visitors can be creative, using a range of materials to immerse themselves in the ideas and forms of the Bauhaus. An ideal activity for the summer holidays!

Reinvention of Matter – Ripensare la materia

Should you happen to be spending your free time in Rome, you can even pick up your monthly dose of Bauhaus there: the Centro Internazionale d’Arte Contemporanea’s exhibition “Materie Neu Denken – Ripensare la materia” (“Rethinking Material”) focuses on things that are lost, used and found. 19 students from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar engage in an artistic investigation of the themes of recycling, ecology and art. They are supported by environmental engineers who work in the field of waste and water infrastructure. The project questions and reassesses, with an unusual exchange of perspectives that takes a stance in the current debate on the climate.

By contrast, the guided walk through the Loheland is aimed at bringing the past to life. In 1919, a small group of young women led by Hedwig von Rohden and Louise Langgaard founded the “Loheland Schule für Körperbildung, Landbau und Handwerk” in the Rhön region of Hesse. Every last Sunday of the month until the end of August, you can take part in a guided walk leading you to the individual monuments of the first Bauhaus period (1919 to 1934), reviving the history of the buildings and the women who created them.
