With the aim of permanently reforming building culture, Walter Gropius formed the State Bauhaus of Weimar on 1 April 1919 by merging the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art and Crafts, which had undergone significant transformation under the direction of Henry van de Velde, and the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School, founded in 1860. From the very beginning, the Bauhaus was the subject of heated debate and controversy in the Weimar Republic and in conservative urban circles. Nonetheless, Gropius succeeded in channelling the artistic diversity of the Bauhaus workshops into an internationally oriented school of art and design which became an important meeting place for the European avant-garde.

In 2019 Germany will mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, the most famous school of art and design of the 20th century. Today its legend endures in Weimar. Starting in April 2019, Weimar will commemorate the Bauhaus anniversary. In the second half of the year, the commemorative events will culminate in a Triennale of Modernism – a weekend of concerts, the presentation of the newly opened bauhaus museum weimar and the World Heritage Sites, including the Bauhaus model Haus Am Horn, restored to its original form and material condition. Visitors will have the chance to view the world’s oldest Bauhaus collection, established by Walter Gropius in 1925, at the bauhaus museum weimar at its new location in the Quarter of Weimar Modernism.
