Is there a piece of a future state in every sliding window?
Everything used to be better in the past, even the future. The much-quoted phrase attributed to Karl Valentin, a Bauhaus contemporary, but not a Bauhaus protagonist, could also apply to the legendary design school’s “horizons of expectation”. A conference in Weimar in late November 2019 investigated the visions of Modernity – and 100 Years of Bauhaus joined in.
In the Provincial Heartland
Touring exhibitions, once censored documentary films, tubular-steel cantilever chairs and Zollinger roofs: we recommend some October events that will often take you out of the major cities and into the provincial heartland. They offer small, but exquisite exhibitions, guided tours, performances and virtual realities, thereby providing a new perspective on the Bauhaus and Modernity.
Opening: Bauhaus Museum Dessau
The opening of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau on 8 September 2019 is one of the highlights of the centenary. For the very first time the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s unique collection will be displayed in a comprehensive way and at the same time the museum will be established as location for contemporary positions that also connects the Bauhaus Buildings.
Berlin celebrates 100 years of bauhaus
Berlin is celebrating the Bauhaus centenary with countless events throughout the year and the bauhaus week from 31 August to 8 September. With exhibitions, artistic performances, installations, lectures and workshops that invite visitors to participate, the festival carries the innovative design ideas and social visions of the Bauhaus throughout the city.
Berlin never sleeps, so there’s plenty to experience at night, with a wealth of activities in September. The city offers a programme with something for everyone: from architecture to film and photography, and from young talents to professional artists. Have you ever followed an electrical orchestra through a city centre, using periscopes to peer over the building-site fences? No? Then welcome to the Spree!
In the Laboratory of Opportunities
Between August 31 and September 8, Berlin will become a Bauhaus laboratory: at the city’s heartbeat, where the metropolis is especially loud, urban and mobile, the festival organisers of the “bauhaus week 2019” will create spaces for lectures, performances, installations, films, radio evenings and parties. The Project Manager Christoph Tempel and his team from Kulturprojekte Berlin present some of the unmissable events.
